Dubai at the forefront of the World

At full speed, the emirate is preparing Expo 2020, an event of global relevance with a budget of 6.8 billion dollars and a confirmed presence of 190 countries, including “all the Latin American countries” and Spain

Starting October 20 next year and with a budget of 25,000 million dirhams (6.800 million dollars), Expo 2020 Dubai will gather 190 countries under the theme ‘Connecting minds, creating the future’. For six months, the emirate will receive thousands of visitors, the expected final figure being 25 million, according to its organizers. This is the great challenge of an emirate that has generated great expectations in a world event that is celebrated for the first time both in an Arab country and in all of the Middle East.

The Hispanic world is no stranger to it. The Director of International Participants at Expo 2020, Maha Al Gargawi, pointed out that “it is fantastic that all the Latin American countries have confirmed their participation, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Mexico,” which have recently announced publicly that they will be present at the event.

“We are delighted to see the support that Expo 2020 is receiving from the Latin American region, where the countries recognize the benefits of participating,” she said.

According to miss Al Gargawi, the emerging Universal Exhibition offers these territories “the chance to explore new markets and opportunities” in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates and the MEASA region (Middle East, Africa and South Asia).” All the countries of Latin America have shown great interest in and their commitment to Expo 2020, and some of them are already developing their projects.”

Spain also deserves a special chapter. Al Gargawi considers this country as one that has always been closely linked to universal exhibitions since it participated in the first World Fair in London in 1851. Spain hosted major events of this level in 1888 (Barcelona), 1929 (Seville and Barcelona), 1992 (Seville) and 2008 (Zaragoza).

Expo 2020 awaits a strong and significant Spanish presence that will reflect the cultural, creative and gastronomic heritage of a country defined by 700 years of history shared with the Arab world.

“We are serious about the possibility that companies of all sizes from all over the world benefit from the thousands of millions of dollars in opportunities before, during and after Expo 2020”

The Director of International Participants highlighted that we must add the fact that “Expo will be an opportunity for Spanish companies to exchange best practices and showcase their innovative technologies in areas such as water treatment, waste management, transportation and renewable energy.”

This first-level international event will have a great and positive impact on the United Arab Emirates and Dubai as it will “stimulate long-term economic growth”. As supporting data, Al Gargawi revealed that in 2017, Expo awarded more than 10,800 million dirhams (2,940 million dollars) in construction contracts, and that non-construction related contracts amounted to 411 million dirhams (112 million dollars).

Furthermore, she pointed out that the influx of millions of visitors to Dubai and the UAE will produce a positive effect on tourism, thereby generating economic benefits and attracting investments that will encourage new employment opportunities throughout the region. The essential fact is that, according to miss Al Gargawi, the event will allow “to build ties that, beyond year 2020, will continue to contribute to the generation of new business, GDP growth and the creation of jobs in Dubai, the Arab Emirates and throughout the Middle East.”

There are more spaces to explore, such as those created for multiple business opportunities. “We are serious about the possibility of maximizing these options for companies of all sizes around the world through our commercial extension programs with international companies and Chambers of Commerce, in order to ensure that they benefit from the billions of dollars in opportunities before, during and after Expo 2020,” the Director of Participants said.

Expo 2020 is presented as a unique occasion that combines cultural experiences, cutting-edge technologies, gastronomic trips, exhibitions that stimulate reflection, entertainment or major architecture.

“We are delighted to see the support that Expo 2020 is receiving from the region of Latin America and Spain”

As part of the theme ‘Connecting minds, creating the future’, each participating nation will have its own pavilion for the first time in the history of universal exhibitions, which will allow them to show the best of their national potential and innovation.

Expo 2020 will also be the first global show to group the participating countries by theme instead of geographical location. “By organizing national pavilions in accordance with the three key sub-themes of the Expo, ‘Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability’, we hope to provide participants and visitors a more enriching and meaningful experience,” Al Gargawi remarked.

In addition, this is the first time that a universal exhibition takes place from October to April, which is why it will cover numerous national and world celebrations for the first time, including Christmas and New Year. The agenda will aim at offering activities for all tastes, including food, art, music, dance, and cultural shows.

This is a large window to the world that expects to have 30,000 volunteers and is currently growing at an accelerated pace on a total area of 4.38 square kilometers located by the Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai South. There, precisely, the event will be launched on October 20, 2020.
